The Hulongs Take You to the Real Beijing within One Day

Route one, Bell Tower – Smoke-bag Slanting Street – Shichahai Hutong

The trip begins in the north street out of Tiananmen Square, and then you can have a stop at Bell Tower. Go south, and Smoke-bag Slanting Street is waiting. It is an oldest street in Beijing, now decorated by various shops, restaurants and bars. Go forward, and you come to Shichahai Hutong, where countless hutongs formed according to the local physical features. If you are interested, you can visit some Sihe courtyards here, and then you may discover some historical stories.

Route two, Xijiaominxiang Hutong – Dazhalan Hutong – the Azure Stone Workshop

The 1080 m Xijiaominxiang Hutong is from Tiananmen Square on the east to Beixinhua Street on the west. It is the location of many relics of Chinese ancient banks. Dazhalan Hutong has been rebuilt but still remained with the original historical sites and some local delicacy. The Azure Stone Workshop is actually a famous culture street in Beijing, with Chinese traditional architectures, selling the four treasures of the study, i.e. writing brush, ink stick, ink slab, paper, and other unique stuff. For foreigners, these treasures are also nice souvenirs.

Route three, Ju’er Hutong – Nan luo Gu Xiang Hutong

Visit the NO.3, NO.5 and NO.7 courtyards in Ju’er Hutong which are the former residences of Rong Lu, a provincial governor in the late Qing Dynasty. Go out of Ju’er Hutong, you come to Nan luo Gu Xiang Hutong, where eight hutongs arranged in rows. Years by years, on Nan luo Gu Xiang Hutong, bars are increasingly built, which reflect the history of yesterday and prosperity of today.

Route four, Nanhua Gate Hutong – Nan Chi Zi Hutong – Royal City Root Street

To tour in Beijing, apart from hutongs, the Sihe courtyards within the hutongs are also special sceneries that attract tourists all around the world. The Sihe courtyards in Nanhua Gate Hutong, Nan Chi Zi Hutong and Royal City Root Street are worth visiting deeply. When you ride the bike and go through these winding hutongs, you will not care where you are, but just feel endlessly relaxed and cheerful.
